Huawei presented its new P-Series smartphone lineup in an online presentation. In addition to the P40, P40 Pro, there will also be a new P40 Pro +

We all know that Huawei can produce great and good smartphones, but is the P-Series smartphone, which is equipped for the first time without Google services and apps, also good?

Techgarage was able to test the P40 Pro in Silver Frost for the past few days and will help you decide whether you should buy it.

Design - new glass processing

Like practically all top smartphones from Huawei “> Huawei , the P40 / Pro is also of high quality. Except for the stainless steel frame, everything is made of glass. In addition to the smooth glass, Huawei is now also offering two colors (Silver Frost, Blush Gold), which are more matte and shouldn't slip out of your hand that easily. Personally, I'm still a fan of the Amber Sunrise, which Huawei introduced with the P30 / P30 Pro , but I also think Silver Frost is very cool, as it turns a little bluish when exposed to light.

While Huawei still installed a 3.5mm headphone jack on the P30 / P30 Pro and Mate 30 / Mate 30 Pro , the P40 does without it completely. Here, too, users have to use USB-C headphones or Bluetooth headphones.

Display - 90 Hz only and only for Pro

Huawei has installed a 6.58 inch curved OLED screen with 2640 x 1200 pixels in the P40 Pro, which I really like. Unfortunately, Huawei does without the notch, which was still found in the Mate 30, and installed a hole punch in the upper left corner of the screen, which I personally cannot get used to.

What the competition like OPPO can already do with the Find X2 seems to find its way to the consumers with Huawei only with the Mate 40. We're talking about the refresh rate. Huawei uses 60 Hz in its non-Pro device and 90 Hz in all Pro devices, while the competition already uses 120 Hz. You can see what the difference looks like with a video from OnePlus.

Camera - 5x optical zoom

Huawei has been producing great cameras in collaboration with Leica for several years. The Chinese manufacturer would like to raise the bar again with the P40 and P40 Pro. While the P30 still had a 5x hybrid zoom , the P40 manages a 5x optical zoom. The result is impressive. For this, Huawei installs a 1 / 1.28 inch image sensor.

Huawei has installed two RYYB sensors for this. The first is equipped with a 50 megapixel UltraVision camera, which has an F / 1.9 aperture and an optical image stabilizer. The second sensor is equipped with a 40 megapixel video and ultra wide angle camera (f / 1.8), a 12 megapixel SuperSensing telephoto camera (f /3.4,) and a TOF sensor.

Huawei advertises with the 50x SuperSensing zoom without loss of quality, but this is absolutely no good, because the quality decreases massively from 20x.

Front camera - 32 megapixels for selfies

Even if I don't like the hole punch in the display, Huawei has built a lot there. Thanks to the camera and the infrared sensor, the smartphone remains protected from unauthorized persons. For the perfect selfies there is a 32 megapixel camera (F / 2.2), a 3D depth sensor and a macro camera so that pictures are sharp from a distance of 2.5 centimeters.

As expected, the P40 Pro produced great pictures in the selfie test.

Battery - big but slow

While the little brother has a 3800 mAh battery, the P40 Pro has a 4200 mAh battery, which is good for the day. Compared to the Find X2 from OPPO (65W), the P40 Pro can only offer 40W fast charging power.

5G and Dual SIM for everyone

Huawei is now installing 5G as standard in its P40 smartphones. So you are prepared for the new standard. In addition, Huawei offers the option of using two SIM cards or one SIM card + 1 eSIM. If you don't use the second SIM slot, you can use the special memory card from Huawei to increase your storage space.

Life without Google

Since the dispute between the USA and Huawei is still going on and the Chinese company is still not allowed to work with Google “> Google , users have to do without the Google Play Store and Google Apps.

Although Huawei has its own store with the AppGallery, developers are currently struggling to optimize their app for HMS . Furthermore, the store is still far from being a good recommendation for apps to users. As far as usability is concerned, the new owner of a P40 must first download unnecessary apps during the setup process or deselect them with millimeter precision.

If you want to use the Huawei P40, you should download the APKPure app right from the start . It serves as an AppStore which does not offer paid apps, but sells the official APK (app files). The advantage here is the update function, which is built-in, so users don't have to laboriously search for and reinstall each app.

Conclusion

In my personal opinion, Huawei has relied heavily on cameras for years, which has given them a nice lead over the past few years. The P40 Pro takes great pictures day and night. The 5x zoom is impressive and manages to take a sharp picture of an object even without a tripod. The selfie camera is also impressive.

Even if Huawei has again built in great camera technology in the P40, it looks a bit poor in other areas. With a refresh rate of only 90 Hz and a battery that can only be charged with 40W fast charging, it lags a bit behind the competition.

If you are seriously considering buying a Huawei P40, in our opinion you have to ask yourself whether you can use it without Google services and the many apps that are not yet available in the AppGallery. Of course, a solution like APKPure helps a lot, but it's not quite as simple as a real app store.
